by Julie Carrick-Davies

The eleventh Solheim Cup is to be held in Sicily for the first time. Seven years ago, England last made the team as world number one, Bronte Law, and European rookie Mhairi Spence were victorious. In 2005, England claimed four points to Europe’s three but today’s team will be even stronger and a more convincing performance could give Europe the victory they are gunning for in September 2019. On the eve of what will be the eighth and ninth matches in successive years, former BBC Sports Extra host Julie Carrick-Davies looks back at the game’s elite.

October 2015: As the match of the night is shaping up, Cristie Kerr on the 18th tee knocks a tiny three putt to sink the match. US are behind by one hole.

The Americans won the 2013 match, teaming Stacy Lewis with Brittany Lang to beat German Angela Stanford and Ai Miyazato.

During the last week of October 2012, England’s Kelly Shadbolt played the ball of her life to win the Junior Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor. The Northern Irish team of Paula Creamer and Stephanie Meadow repeated the feat two years later at the same venue.

The amazing thing for the Amateurs and for amateur golf in general in 2012 was the number of juniors who qualified for the US Open at the turn of the year. That was a season without a single amateurs finishing in the top 20 of the field. The net handicap were at three or four and they were new clubs for the PGA.
