Canelo Alvarez has announced that he will be fighting Ilunga Makabu in a catch-weight contest in the United States on October 20.
Alvarez will need the win to earn a shot at WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. The fight is being billed by Oscar De La Hoya as a “super fight” and Alvarez will need to provide evidence of his ability to overcome a disciplined, young, strong cruiserweight by overcoming one of the greatest punchers in boxing.
The October matchup pits the Olympic silver medalist, Chicotuan, against the Maserati driver from Johannesburg, South Africa. Their clash is set to take place at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. It will mark the first time in Alvarez’s career that he will fight someone with a boxing license in their home country.
“Boxing is a business like no other. It can be dangerous, but it also is an adventure and I am always exploring new horizons,” Alvarez said in a statement. “I have fought the best fighters in the world so far and this year I plan to dominate again.”
For his part, Makabu said he was happy to be challenged by such a “talented opponent.”
